You can die a hero or get to live long enough for yourself become the villain,” it’s the premise of The Dark Knight. Christian Bale is now a villain, this time for Marvel’s Thor: Love and Thunder. A formidable antagonist. The story follows the comic book plot and Jane Foster (Natalie Portman) is returning. Taika Waititi’s hilarious wit is obvious. Love and Thunder is a standalone movie that does not meet the standards of Thor: Ragnarok (2017).

Thor has been a part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe for more than a decade however his stand-alone films have either hit the mark or missed the mark entirely. Thor: The Dark World (2013) was a mediocre entry. Thor: The Origins Story (2011) was a nice start. But, any list of top five MCU films would contain Thor: Ragnarok (2017) absolutely. The return of the Hemsworth-Taika Waititi collaboration meant expectations were at an all-time high ahead of the release.
Gorr (Bale) Gorr (Bale), god who seeks to exterminate all gods, hits New Asgard to steal Stormbreaker. Thor must stop the god-killer by joining with Tessa Thompson, Korg (Waititi) and Jane Foster, his ex-girlfriend who is now Mighty Thor. The film is simple and easy to understand, which is an improvement from the previous Marvel movies. The acting is also good. Hemsworth is a great choice for the character who is going through the midlife crisis, however Bale and Portman make an impact. The opening credit sequence the extent to which Bale can accomplish. Gorr could well have been the next Thanos for MCU which is in dire need of good supervillains and Bale adds a touch of oddity to the character but there’s not much of a much more.
Portman is Mjolnir’s ex-girlfriend who has cancer. Marvel appears to be keen on handing over the mantles Hawkeye and Hulk to female characters. I had hoped that the Mighty Thor would be similar to the checklist for representation. However, the film offers the story of this astrophysicist to showcase her biceps in many scenes.
Marvel is known for its own flexing too, through the many cameos in the film. In addition to the Guardians of the Galaxy team there are Matt Damon, Sam Neill, and Luke Hemsworth reprising their roles from Thor: Ragnarok as Loki, Odin, and Thor as well as Thor. We also have Melissa McCarthy and her husband Ben Falcone playing Hela and the director of an Asgardian play and director, respectively. Waititi, who has since Ragnarok directed the Oscar-winning Jojo Rabbit, is back with his favorite type of play. It’s hilarious to watch the likes of a pair of noisy goats and Korg’s narration on Thor’s backstory. Thor does leg-splits. Valkyrie is Old Spice’s ambassador.
The premise is that Thor desires his Mjolnir but is scared of the jealousy of Stormbreaker. Unfortunately, these gags while effective, do so at the expense emotion , and also expose the wafer-thin plot as well. Thor: Love and Thunder covers a wide range of love, ranging from a father-daughter relationship to the complicated romantic relationship of estranged lovers… There’s an analogy between Gorr losing his respect for his god, Rapu, and Thor becoming disappointed with Zeus (played by Russell Crowe). All these concepts are there, but…
There are many connections to films such as Harry Potter and Interstellar, as well as Easter eggs. The camera shows the god of death, Falligar, taken straight from comic books. We can see Hemsworth sporting the first Thor costume that comic-book readers recognize. During a fight with Zeus, Thor reveals his true colours. We also see a tattoo reading ‘RIP Loki The helmet of the trickster on our Viking’s back. The terrible Necrosword is revealed and it’s fascinating to see how other weapons are revealed to be able to control people, especially given how Stormbreaker and Mjolnir seem to have their own minds.
The scene we were shown using Shang Chi’s ten ring and Ms. Marvel’s dazzling Bangle as well as the Ebony blade from the Eternals post-credits scene. After the show that Marvel recently aired, Moonknight, the line, “Gods will use you but they will never make you stronger” feels relatable. There’s a reference to Valkyrie losing her beloved girlfriend in war and Korg falling in love with another Kronan man.
The first half is reminiscent of all the colour we loved in Ragnarok However, the majority of the second half takes place in the dark world, where everything is monochrome and black. The action scenes in monochrome can be quite satisfying but it is imperative to remember.
Hemsworth as Thor will remain in the role however, which is an immense relief to MCU fans who have seen the first Avengers or risk their lives, or hang up their boots.
